Esme Winter Boots

One dragonfly stops you. The others you find later.

The one that stops you sits halfway up the shaft: a body of gold set with turquoise stones, wings of gold filigree flooded with teal, resting on a gold mandala medallion that opens out behind it in rings and dots. Gold beads scatter away from it down the boot. One of the others is drawn in plain gold line and sits across the toe, wings open flat above a mandala sunk into the emerald a shade darker, so you meet it every time you look at your own feet.

Higher up, near the collar, a lotus bud closes to a point in green and gold with an amber light in its middle. Small gold flecks are thrown across the shaft between all of it, and the deep green underneath keeps its own mandala running quietly on out to the heel.

The hardware, plainly

• Cream trim at the collar — a thick pale ring finishing off the top of the shaft, cream against the deep green
• Thick black lugged sole — deep cleats cut across the bottom, with a good stack of height under the printed upper
• Two studs, then five eyelets, black laces, round toe — every row opens with two solid studs and carries five open eyelets under them, and the front of the boot is cut round rather than tapered, which is exactly what gives that toe dragonfly its full wingspan

None of that is what you notice first with them on. What you notice first is the padding — there is a soft layer worked into the inside of each boot, and it is what makes them warm.

On sizing: US 4.5 to 14, and the half sizes are all in there. It is a small thing to list and a large thing to live with, especially if your foot has spent its life landing between two numbers on everybody else's chart.

These are put together after you order, one pair at a time. It means waiting a bit. It also means your size is there for the choosing.
